Scripted Life

In this week’s podcast episode titled “Scary Things” Teresa and I talk about the upcoming Halloween holiday and things that frighten us. In the episode Teresa and I both talk about our very real fear of horror movies. The podcast may give you a chuckle or two, so when you get a chance, please give it a listen. Even though the episode is lighthearted, fear is very real.

In the episode we share that even though Teresa and I know the scene depicted in the movies have been created by writers and brought to life by producers, the scenes aren’t real. Some of them seem familiar; we’ve seen them play out many times, but we still are frightened. We quiver, eyes bulging at what we know is coming. Someone approaches the house, charms their way in the door with lies, only to cause the occupant harm or to kill them. The scenes seem so real that our bodies have a strong physical reaction to what we are seeing onscreen even when we know it’s scripted.

That made me think about things that don’t seem scary but turn out to be so. Relationships are scary. When you first meet, there is an attraction and excitement at the possibility of what may potentially lie ahead. Is he the one? Could this be more than just a date? Is he being real or is he playing a part, only showing me what he believes I want to see to get me to open the door? Will I be harmed, or will he kill parts of me which may never be recovered?

Yes, horror movies are scary; however, the reality is that real life can be even scarier. Things jump out unexpectedly that we certainly weren’t expecting. Illness, financial challenges, job loss, divorce are just some of life’s very scary scenes. We become afraid; our bodies react to that fear in very real ways. Our heart rate increases, our stomachs feel queasy and our bodies become tense. We become unsure about our next move. This isn’t scripted, or is it?

Just like when we watch horror movies, we have to remember that our story has in fact been scripted. We can rest in the assurance that we have the greatest executive producer of all and only He determines our ending. If you are like me, even though at times life seems incredibly scary, I take great comfort in that and await the next scene.
