A Good Life Just Doesn’t Happen

What does a good life look like? For me, it means a happy, healthy family, financial security, and the ability to serve others. For someone else, it may mean meaningful relationships, fulfilling work, freedom, peace, or simply more time with the people they love.
Most of us can describe what we want, yet we rarely stop to ask whether our daily choices are helping us create it. We get busy, settle into routines, and respond to whatever feels urgent. Before long, life can feel as though it is simply happening to us.
Intentional living is the practice of becoming more conscious of our choices and aligning them with what matters most. It does not require planning every detail or constantly trying to improve. It begins with honest questions: What do I want more of? What do I want less of? When do I feel most like myself?
Our calendars often reveal our priorities more clearly than our words. If health matters, does it receive our time? If relationships matter, are loved ones getting more than what is left over? If peace matters, have we made room for quiet?
A good life is usually shaped less by dramatic decisions than by ordinary choices: taking the walk, calling a friend, putting down the phone, saving the money, getting enough sleep, setting a boundary, or trying something new. Repeated choices become patterns, and those patterns become the way we live.
Also, you might want to stop waiting for “someday”. It is easy to postpone the life we want until work settles down, retirement arrives, or everyone else is taken care of. Planning matters, but not if we become so focused on someday that we miss today. Make room now for joy, people you love, and moments when you are not accomplishing or fixing anything—you are simply living.
In closing, what kind of life are you building? We recently explored this idea on the Earrings Off podcast with author and strategic life coach Kirana Sidin. One idea stayed with me: a good life is not something we wait to happen. We build it through the ordinary choices we make.
Your good life does not have to look like anyone else’s; in fact, it likely will not. It simply needs to reflect what genuinely matters to you. Ask yourself: Is the way I am living today helping me build the life I actually want?
If not, you do not have to change everything tomorrow. Make your next choice more intentionally. A good life is built one ordinary choice at a time. Listen to our Earrings Off conversation with Kirana Sidin for more on building your own version of a good life.
