“The Company You Keep: How Your Circle Shapes Your Habits”

There is a reason people often say that you are the company you keep. The people closest to us can influence our mindset, habits, decisions, and even our definition of success.
Consider education. Research has shown that a parent's educational background can influence a child's likelihood of pursuing higher education. Parents and guardians are among the earliest role models in a child's life, shaping everything from eating habits and clothing choices to attitudes about learning and personal achievement.
A 2018 study cited by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics highlighted differences in college enrollment based on parents' educational attainment. This illustrates how the environment we grow up in can help shape our expectations and opportunities.
But the influence of our environment doesn't end with our families. Our friends and the people we spend the most time with can also have a significant impact on our everyday choices.
I've noticed this in my own life, especially when it comes to healthy living.
My close circle of friends tends to gravitate toward a healthier lifestyle. I've admitted before that, among us, I'm probably the least health-conscious one. My friends inspire me—and yes, sometimes challenge me—to make better decisions about what I eat and how I take care of myself.
When I'm around them, making healthier choices feels easier. I see their habits, observe the positive impact those choices have on their lives, and naturally find myself following their lead. Their example reminds me that healthy living doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes, it starts with being around people who make those choices a regular part of their lives.
Now, let's flip the script.
When I'm around friends who are less focused on healthy eating, I can easily find myself making different choices. If someone orders a burger, fries, and a milkshake, suddenly I'm scanning the menu for milkshake flavors. A salad? That thought may not even cross my mind!
It's a reminder that our surroundings can influence us in ways we don't always recognize. We often adopt the habits, attitudes, and behaviors that feel normal within our social circles.
And I say this after returning from breakfast with friends, where I managed to consume what felt like my entire daily calorie allowance in one sitting! Unfortunately, I'm not exaggerating.
My first instinct was to skip eating for the rest of the day and drink plenty of water to make up for it. But the bigger lesson is not about punishing ourselves for one indulgent meal. It's about becoming more intentional about our choices and recognizing the influence our environment has on them.
As we approach the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, when delicious food, family gatherings, and social events are often at the center of our celebrations, consider this your friendly reminder to be mindful of the company you keep—and the habits you cultivate.
You don't have to abandon friendships or expect everyone around you to share your goals. Instead, surround yourself with people who encourage your growth, respect your priorities, and inspire you to become the best version of yourself.
Take a moment to reflect: Is your circle helping you move closer to the lifestyle you want, or making it harder to get there? Remember, the people around you may influence your choices, but you still have the power to decide which habits you want to keep. Choose your circle wisely and be intentional about the influence you allow into your life.
